Sourdough replaces yeast. Using a fed starter in a recipe will give it back unfed; feed it again before its next use.

If your starter jar disappears after using it in a multiplayer recipe, it should have been returned unfed.

</aside>

  1. Combine a jar, lid, traditional flour, and water to make a Sourdough Starter. Traditional flour includes wheat, rye, and barley flour.
  2. Feed an unfed starter with traditional flour and water to refresh it.
  3. A fed starter becomes unfed after about one day. An unfed starter dies after about another day and a half if it is not fed.

Sourdough Starter is used for sourdough loaves, baguettes, breadsticks, burger and hotdog buns, rye and barley sourdough, and sourdough pizza dough. See Baking for those recipes.

A Yeast Starter is a renewable substitute for packaged yeast. It ferments for about 5 days, then stays fed for about 2 days.

</aside>

  1. Combine a jar, lid, fruit, sugar, water, and a knife to make a Yeast Starter (Fermenting).
  2. Leave it for 5 days to become a fed Yeast Starter.
  3. Feed an unfed starter with sugar and water, then leave it to ferment for about 5 days. An unfed starter dies after about 2 days if it is not fed.
  4. A dead Yeast Starter can still be used in the 60-day vinegar route.

Use Yeast Starter anywhere a recipe accepts yeast, including homemade beer, wine, vinegar, and relevant baking recipes.
